We’ve been spending the last two weeks featuring our favorite family vacations.  As winter break is here, many of us either never made it around to setting up travel plans or decided it just wasn’t going to work this time around.  If you are a stay-at-home or work-at-home parent, or if you have some vacation days to take this coming week, here are some ideas of where to go locally for your “staycation”!  I will list things on Long Island first, and will then cover day trips you can make regionally such as in NYC, Westchester, NJ, and CT.



Long Island Children’s Museum 11 Davis Ave, Garden City. (while the Fairy Tale Exhibit has now ended, there is always something amazing going on at the LICM!  Check out “When The Earth Shakes”, going on through April!

The Cradle of Aviation Museum: Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Garden City. Long Island’s Air and Space Museum. Over 75 air and space craft in 8 exhibit galleries, chronicling 100 years of aviation.

Long Island Puppet Theater, 10 Heitz Place, Hicksville.  Go see a puppet show!  They have a complete winter recess schedule with shows and special events for all!

Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center: 1 Davis Ave, Garden City.  It is a nearly 10,000 square foot interactive facility where individuals, families and groups can experience first-hand the proud tradition of firefighting in our communities . Visitors can also trace the history of firefighting in Nassau County with hands-on exhibits that feature antique and contemporary fire apparatus and gear.

Vanderbilt Museum: 180 Little Neck Rd, Centerport.  Vanderbilt Museum is a unique combination of mansion, marine and natural history museum, planetarium and park. Visit us for a fun filled day!

Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center:  431 E Main St, Riverhead.  One of its biggest attractions is a 20,000-US-gallon coral reef display tank, which is one of the largest all-living coral displays in the Western Hemisphere.

Don’t want to go to a museum or aquarium?  Go ice skating at Marjorie Post Park (451 Unqua Road, Massapequa) for outdoor skating or Bethpage Community Park (1001 Stewart Ave., Bethpage) for indoor skating!  For the President’s Week schedule, click here.

Star Wars and the Power of Costume Exhibit, Times Square (226 W 44th St New York, NY) is a Smithsonian Exhibition which features costumes from the two previous Star Wars trilogies as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  It is going on through September 5th!

Take a trip on the Intrepid!  (And KIDS WEEK is this week!)  New York City’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex is an educational and cultural non-profit institution centered on the aircraft carrier Intrepid.
