Low Sodium, Low Carb Recipes for The Big Game

If you follow my wife’s blog “Massapequa Family”, you can see that we are working on a low sodium and low carb lifestyle.  We’ve been taking every day recipes and making them more conducive to my dietary needs.  So far it is working.  But what about on special occasions such as one of the most anticipated nights in America?  For those of us trying to eat healthy, what can we have while watching The Super Bowl?

Our friends over at Stop & Shop have some nice recipes you might want to try for your Big Game Party!  I thought I’d share some, and hoping my wife will make some of these for watching the game!


Sweet Buffalo Shrimp

Vegetable cooking spray
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar (we use Truvia Brown Sugar Blend)
1/4 cup chopped onion
4 cloves garlic, finely minced
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup tap water
1/4 cup ketchup (we use Heinz No Salt Ketchup)
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
36 large shrimp, peeled and deveined


  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Lightly spray a large baking dish with vegetable cooking spray.
  3. Combine brown sugar, onion, garlic, cider vinegar, water, ketchup and Worcestershire in a saucepan.
  4. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cook for 10 min., stirring occasionally.
  5. In the baking dish, pour the mixture over the shrimp, stirring to combine.
  6. Bake for 6-8 min. until cooked through.  Serve warm or chilled.


Light Spinach Dip
10 oz frozen chopped spinach, defrosted
1 cup low-fat or nonfat mayonnaise
1 cup low-fat sour cream
1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts
3 green onions, chopped
2 Tbsp no salt herb seasoning
Chopped red pepper and red onion to garnish, if desired


  1. Drain the spinach and squeeze dry.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Add spinach and mix well.
  4. Refrigerate 3 hours before serving.
  5. Garnish with chopped red pepper and red onion, if desired.

Mini Game Time Cheesesteaks
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 cups thinly sliced onion
1/2 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
1 lb sirloin steak, frozen for about an hour for easy cutting
1/4 tsp salt
ground black pepper
2 slices provolone cheese, cut into 8 pieces
8 butter dinner rolls or slider rolls


  1. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté onions until softened and starting to brown, about 6 min. Add peppers and mushrooms and cook until vegetable mixture is
    tender, about another 6-8 min. more. Transfer
    mixture to a bowl.
  2. Meanwhile, slice steak very thinly and season with salt (in moderation) and pepper. Heat remaining oil in skillet and cook steak slices until browned and cooked through, about 4–5 min.
  3. Top each dinner roll with meat, a piece of cheese and some of the vegetable mixture. Serve while warm.
