A Christmas Village on Our Lawn, We’re Making Memories!

This will be our fourth Christmas here in Massapequa Park.  I cannot believe how quickly time flies.  We officially moved in on December 21, 2012 and my husband and I vowed to each other that we would not only have the furniture in and the boxes unpacked, but we would have our Christmas tree up and ready for Santa by Christmas morning.

That first Christmas was a tough one because unpacking and setting up rooms, finding all of our dishes and everything we owned that was in boxes with four kids in tow was exhausting, but we made it work!  We did not have any Christmas decorations up except our tree and our nativity.  But we enjoyed it and Santa didn’t miss a beat!

Every year, we have been adding new decorations both inside and outside.  The year later, we moved our tree from the dining room to the living room, where it has gone up every year since.  My dad made us a special shelving system for our dining room windows to display our Christmas village, and although it is very time consuming, I get great pleasure out of putting those intricate pieces in my village!

For the past two Christmases we have been working on our front lawn.  I vividly remember as a kid, going down into my basement to see my parents and my aunt and uncle (we owned a two family house together) painting and drawing and glittering and cutting wood and making decorations that would be put up in our lawn.  I remember amazing and beautiful memories of the kids helping the adults and enjoying the family time.  My husband was on the same page with me when I suggested we do the same.  And so, we decided this year to create a “Christmas Village” on our front lawn.

We started a few months back cutting and painting plywood.  We got good practice doing “tombstones” for Halloween.

I used my Silhouette craft cutter and software to design and create the facades of the buildings.  We decided our village will have a church, a Santaland, a toy store, a bakery, a fire house and a post office.  We all had so much fun putting the details on the buildings.

Cut out the vinyl details and laid them out on the “building”

Finally, it was time to put it all together!  We put the buildings out on the lawn first, and then added all the other decorations and lights.

It was a lot of work, but we’re finally done decorating for Christmas!
